Joshua: Moses’ Minister

Joshua was the son of Nun, from the tribe of Ephraim
He must have had a humble beginning
Born as many others to slaves in Egypt
A servant first, a leader next, a tale worth reading

Joshua was a loyal, trusted aide of Moses
Not for him the duplicity of two-faced eye service
He was content to be a footman to a great man
And for forty years he was a prophet’s apprentice

When Moses went to the Holy mount to receive
The commandments written by God’s hand on tablets
Aaron, Hur and many of the noble elders waited
Outside the camp where Israel was billeted
Joshua went with Moses to where God gazetted
His laws for Israel, while Joshua stood behind his lord

One day the army of Amalek ambushed Israel
Hoping to halt the march of the Holy Exodus
Moses turned to Joshua to lead the fight
They trounced the enemy and put them to flight
Joshua won a great victory, God recorded it for posterity

When Joshua heard of two men prophesying
In the camp, away from where Moses ordered
He thought it was insurrection multiplying
And offered to quell the revolt so Moses be not bothered
Moses calmed him-he didn’t want a monopoly of the Spirit
And preferred to share administration with the seventy
Lest he be overworked, for he knew his limit

This Joshua was the Boanerges of the Old Testament
So when Israel camped at Kadesh-Barnea
When the fair land of promise loomed so near
Twelve spies were chosen to survey the land
And report their findings to the larger Israelite band
Joshua was one of the twelve-that explains itself

Ten of the spies told a chilling, horrific tale
The mission to inhabit Canaan was doomed to fail
The inhabitants were great, their defences not frail

Joshua tore his clothes in dismay
His voice thundered and silenced the crowd
God will fight for Israel and give them the land, come what may.
The people still disbelieved, unbelief had them cowed

When Moses’ ministry was ending
God asked him to commission Joshua
In the presence of the high priest, Eleazer
If he needed Divine direction, he should look no further
Than Eleazer’s Urim Thummim, the final arbiter

Moses’ final injunction to the budding leader Joshua
Was to be of good courage for the next stage
Joshua had now become Israel’s leader
The warrior-general that would lead to Canaan’s age

Joshua’s life teaches the profit in humility
Interest will accrue if you negate self-interest for duty
Also shows what leaders in any age should do
When they, in times of doubt and ambiguity
Need wisdom-consult the Urim Thummim
The Urim Thummim of today is the Word, hear ye Him

Love, love this. The place of humble service and timing in ministry and the role of wise counsel from Jethro to Moses stood out for me. The Urim- Thummim of today is the word. Yaaaay! Great job telling these stories via poetry; consistently so. Refreshing read. God bless you.
