Saul’s Debacle

Saul fought many battles and for the most part he sought
The will of God at the start lest the military campaign be a dud
Yet he was patently presumptuous-a fact that becomes clear to us
This proved to be his Achilles heel, his spiritual banana peel

Israel was at war with the philistines whose enmity had no remedy
Saul mobilized his forces-plenty footmen but hardly any horses
The troops were to wait in Gilgal for seven days
For then Samuel would arrive and pray for the warriors to thrive
This schedule was agreed with Saul who saw no need to argue

The people waited loyally till the seventh day and began to melt away
Saul fearing desertion decided to usurp Samuel’s function
He would offer sacrifices and prayers to kick start the battle
This he did with relish-till Samuel appeared

Saul’s Ascension

The son of Kish was selected to be the king of Israel
He was to be the first monarch and he towered over the rest
Head and shoulders above in height, a giant from a family slight
In fame and reckoning-for he was only a Benjaminite

Saul’s father lost his asses and sent Saul and servants to find them
For days they travelled through twisting turns and winding ways
And found them not-all their striving was for naught
Then they decided to inquire from the prophet
It was Israel’s custom-the ‘hard to fathom’ was referred
To Samuel, the mighty seer that had the ear of God

God was working on other side of the line too
He told Samuel to expect to see the man to be anointed King
And told him his mission and the tidings he would bring

Samuel: A Prophet Rejected

Samuel’s sons were wild and wayward souls
He appointed them judges but they were lucre’s stooges
Perverting justice for the bounty of bribes
They soon earned the scorn of all Israel’s tribes

Israel wanted a new administration to lead her
No more of the prophet and his dubious seed
They wanted a king like neighbouring nations
A hereditary monarch might lack the knack for lucre

It was a bad excuse and a lame one to use
For kings and princes can be lit by avarice’s fuse
For administrative misdeeds she rejected Divine leadership
Turned aside from God’s Provided way because a few made hay

Samuel’s Revival

One day the child-prophet heard God’s voice
It came as he began to sleep and stars started to peep
He thought it was the call of Eli who was the only one nigh
Thrice he went, by the third Eli realized the call was from on high
And told him to reverently respond for it was God’s voice

The voice of God was scarce in those days
Visions were few and there was no major prophet to rue
The evil deeds of people or minister to their spiritual needs
The merciful God gave that age a guiding light
Samuel was called to save Israel from her blind plight

He grew and flourished in the prophetic ministry
Teaching the laws of God and judging matters with the Word
He was a circuit preacher, toiling for God-not to be richer
His annual prophetic tour was to four cities in Israel
Samuel’s court was sought after in Bethel, Gilgal, Mizpeh and Ramah
