Malachi: End Foreshadowing Beginning

Malachi was the last of the prophets before John
After him the era of law and testimony was done
But it was four hundred years before the new begun

He spoke of the elective love of God for Israel
Which they doubted-thinking of absent blessings
Doubt not, Malachi said, look around and about
From Esau’s Edomite children learn some lessons
For while the light of love shone on Jacob’s seed
The ruin of perdition awaited Edomite vile weed

God’s love is manifested by mercy’s dewdrops
Not in indices of success or abacus of affluence
If to you the arm of the Lord is clearly revealed
You are at mercy and truth’s blessed confluence
If the Bible to you is not a book of arguable parables
Be elated you are elected, do not ape the rejected

The prophet turned his gaze to those who preferred
To give Caesar his due, and God a gift of lesser hue
For sickly animals were good for the Lord’s altar
Yet they would not dare give a human dignitary
A present of shabby quality-the heart of the matter
For the heart that places God first, will give Him best

He spoke of momentous days ahead for Israel
The God who was hidden behind badgers’ skin
Will veil Himself in flesh without warning
And descend to become our kith and kin
In a Temple Divinely created for Himself
Still veiled to some-behind virgin born skin

Suddenly He will appear, unnoticed not unheralded
John was to fore-run Him and get people prepared
To receive in flesh the coveted covenant messenger
Jehovah, the Pillar of Fire and Angel in the wilderness
Condescended to a mere manger; our lives to bless

It is He, the human form of the fiery Pillar
That would purify Israel like a gold refiner
Though her iniquities heaped by the score
Till they became gross and her impurities dross,
She would be restored to holiness once more

Malachi was the last prophet of the Law’s era
But his prophecies straddle the beginning
And end of the current dispensation of Grace
For he also prophesied of Christ’s coming
The second time-to empty His cup of fury
And fiery indignation on enemies of salvation

The saints will walk on the ashes of the wicked
But before sundry tares are gathered and burnt
A message would fore-run that day of great dread
The wheat would be restored-seed of the fathers
Back to the Word, to the way the apostles trod
