Jeremiah or Hannaniah?

Israel was a chosen race, called by God. There were a people with uncommon grace. But this covenant was dependent on being obedient.

After generations of idolatry and spiritual infidelity, God had enough. He thundered seventy years of Babylonian captivity for his erring children.
God thought it, Jeremiah said it and that should have settled it.
No so fast, for the political prophet Hannaniah countered the prophecy: the merciful God will only allow two years of captivity
A God of love or a Deity of doom, seventy years or two to calm their fears?
They believed Hannaniah yet a generation died pining in exile. They that despise the covenant lose all claims to the Grace they defy. 

A Prophet Like Unto Moses

Moses thus commissioned went to Pharaoh
With his message of Exodus and Jewish liberation
As prophesied, Egypt’s ruler did not budge
For God had destined a time of tribulation
To show His power can cure bondage’s scourge

Plague after plague descended on Egypt
Yet she persisted, energized by stubborn will
And death-seeking defiance, dance of the crypt

Soon there was blood on the Nile
A sudden hail of flies, frogs and locusts
A rain of destruction on livestock
‎ Three days of darkness in the land of the cursed
With light in Hebrew Goshen-still defiance bossed
Till the last plague-death of all first born at dawn

The nation of Israel went on their merry way
With gold and silver jewels their severance pay
‎The Egyptians were eager to retire them early
Only at end of their toils were they treated fairly

The marching band, Canaan-bound ‎soon halted
The path God chose led through the foaming sea
Behind lurked a wistful king leading a racing army
To reclaim the departing whom they had set free

What would Moses do in this siege of pain?
Midst murmuring and tears, God asked him to speak
The waters fled for dread and Israel walked on sea bed
Pursuers followed, hoping to prey on the weak
Moses closed the sea path and predators floated
Bloated bodies ‎that Israel in victory ballads noted

They camped around the bitter waters of Marah
No one could drink in this wasting wilderness
Moses sweetened it, it was God’s tenderness

They fed on manna, heaven-baked angels’ food
When they lusted for meat, He rained birds
‎In this Exodus, God provided all things good

Moses was unlike any other prophet
Not for him the fading dream or clear vision
God spoke to him from lip to ear, direct and clear
‎He was a Divine Law-giver ordained to his nation

When Israel sinned and God threatened destruction
Moses offered himself to die instead of his nation
He felt it was better he perished ‎than all he cherished
God spared Israel and accepted his intercession

Centuries later, Christ the Law-giver of Mount Olives
Died to save His elect nation from Divine wrath
Sparing us in this Exodus, swapping His life for lives

Yet this Moses did not attain object of the Exodus
He only saw the land of promise from afar
Goaded by Israel he struck the water-giving Rock‎ twice
Strike the Rock once, after that, speak for water
Was the instruction he failed to perform to the letter

Christ the Rock was smitten once at Calvary
He was smitten for salvation, sustenance and healing
To drink life-giving water, speak to Him without wavering
‎Crucify Him not again by despising His sacrifice
Lest in this Exodus you perish for unbelief’s vice

Yet this Moses was vindicated in the end
For in Egypt, he bore the reproach of Christ’s message
Centuries later, he stood with glorious visage
With Him for whom he stood, on Mount Transfiguration
Speaking with the Rock as disciples watched in admiration

Moses: The Sign And It’s Message

‎God called his name from the burning bush
Moses was now standing on hallowed ground
Made holy by the descent of the Holy God
Same grounds that Moses trod when grazing around

God had heard the affliction of His people
Woes and wailing for wounds of taskmasters
He had descended to liberate and to topple
Their oppressors-the first anti-Semitic haters

He promised an exodus, an end to the old
And a journey to a new land of milk and honey
Acquisition of ‎huge tracts of land without money

And this was not strange for it was promised
To Abraham, that His seed would suffer
In a strange land for four centuries before God would offer
Succour, liberation and then the jubilation of possession

Moses listened in awe, He realized it was God by His word
He then asked He that spoke in the Bright Flame
What shall I say is your Name?
God replied I AM THAT I AM, tell Israel that I AM

Many centuries later, the God of the burning ‎bush
Incarnated in flesh and told Israel He was the I AM
Abraham saw, unlike Moses they that heard were not calm
They wanted to stone Him-could this pushover be Jehovah?

God gave Moses two signs-his rod turning to a serpent
And his hand becoming leprous after placing in his bosom
If Israel failed to believe the Voice of the first sign
Or the second-judgement ‎would strike without ransom
Bloody recompense for those who won’t tow the line
Israel escaped for she, by choice believed the Voice

What was the Voice of the appearing Sign?
What Message was behind serpent rod and leprous hand?
It was a Scriptural Voice, an exodus by Divine design

Israel could look back and see the promise
She could see the age of fulfillment had come
Her belief was thus based on a spiritual premise

As it was with Moses, any true prophetic wonder or sign
Must herald a revelation promised for that age
Otherwise it’s routine miraculous magic by those who dine
In Pharaoh’s ‎court, a false anointing that comes to naught

Moses: From Prince To Prophet

From the bulrush, Moses went to the palace
Nursed by his mother, the godly Jochebed
Who told him God’s promise-that he was the ace
To deliver Israel and take them to their place

The glorious kingdom that Egypt then ‎was
Led the civilized world ‎in technology and thought
Palaces, treasure cities, sphinxes, all were wrought
Pyramids were so common they counted for naught
Their treatment of the dead was exemplary, not gory
They mummified dead fathers who they once deified

Moses was trained in these arts and then more
God was training His prophet at His enemy’s door
He learnt military skills; killing methods in days of yore

Amram & Jochebed

Israel had come to Egypt for famine’s succour
Joseph’s ascension saved them from rigour
Exile was wonderful, the land was fruitful
Their lovely Goshen promised a golden future

All changed when a new king arose
A pharaoh who knew not Joseph’s deeds
Nor cared for his people and ‎their needs
Not indifference, but the hatred ‎that feeds
Anti-Semitism, seeds of Holocaust’s weeds
